Scenario
This video opens with an introduction to three core concepts: sex, gender, and sexuality. Our male narrator briefly introduces the core biological differences between cisgendered male and female bodies.
This introduces the concept of biological sex. Two characters enter, and the narrator introduces the concept of gender: a socially-constructed set of expectations about how people of different sexes are supposed to behave. The narrator mentions that in most people, gender identity and biology match: a male-bodied person identifies as a man, and the same for female-bodied people.
The narrator then explains that sometimes people’s biology does not match their gender identity, and it turns out that the two characters on screen fit this criteria: the male-bodied character identifies as a female and the female-bodied identifies as a male. The narrator then adds sexuality to the mix and gives us a very brief definition: ‘who we’re attracted to.’
More characters appear on the screen, and our narrator indicates that there are certain identity categories related to sexuality: homosexual, bisexual, queer, and asexual. As he mentions each category, characters raise their hands to indicate that they belong to that category. The narrator connects sexuality with the term sexual orientation and indicates that while biology and gender identity often do dictate sexuallity, they don’t have to. The narrator goes on to indicate that for some, gender and sexuality are fluid, flexible, and changeable. He connects this to how one operates in the world as the video ends.
